The end of 2014 saw the start of the pilot version of the INNOVATIONLAB, an independent laboratory for innovation for ‘the happy city’. The LAB is a collaboration between outstanding students from TU Delft, Erasmus University Rotterdam and Leiden University, researchers in philosophy, human geography, urban sociology, happiness-psychology, urban design, and innovative start-ups. The initiative was set up by Robbert Jan van der Veen from Plein06 and Stella Groenewoud, student.
The LAB creates concepts for the happy city. Basic human needs in Dutch society are generally fulfilled; almost everyone has food, shelter and care, every person has rights and there is a large social safety net. But the more abstract human needs to have an individual nature. You are responsible for a life in which you make use of your talents and find meaning. But at a time when so many people are struggling with this, the problem lies perhaps not in the individual, but in the collective. The LAB is looking for the next step we can take to facilitate collective happiness in the city.
The INNOVATIONLAB collaborates with the City of Rotterdam and is facilitated by the CIC Venture Cafe.
